When Thomas & Betts gave Creator the job of producing the next generation Ty-Rap tool, ergonomics and function were key. The tool would reduce strain on the hands and wrists of the people working with it, it would be strong but still lightweight.
Thomas & Betts develop professional and durable cable ties for a number of areas of use. For the assembly of cable ties you need a special and adaptable tool, which Creator were given the task of developing.
Creator’s solution was a tool with extremely good ergonomics. As everyone has individual circumstances, the tool needed to be adaptable and adjustable individually. Creator’s solution was an automatic exchange mechanism, which changed down through the gears and adjusted the hand power required to work with the handle. This, in combination with a wheel being able to adjust the position of the handle for smaller or bigger hands, makes the tool reduce the power required for use considerably. This means that even strain on the user’s hands and wrists is reduced.
Bearing in mind the requirements for a lightweight tool, it was important to find a material that could handle the load that the assembly work entailed and that could provide a good manufacturing cost. The solution was a combination of plastic and metal, where the metal was only used for those parts that were particularly exposed to stress. After a pre-study, a prototype was produced which was shown to the customer. The prototype was then tested live under pressure before a larger series was produced.
The tool has quickly become a success. The tool’s superior assembly capacity makes assembly faster and therefore more effective. Ty-Rap® is currently the best-selling tool in its category on the market.
